Botox® for Excessive Sweating
While sweating is a natural response to heat, nervousness, and stress, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be a social and emotional challenge. It can lead to embarrassment and social avoidance due to the unpleasant odor, clothing stains, or the assumption of poor hygiene. However, it’s important to note that excessive sweating is not your fault. The good news is that there’s a solution-Botox injections. These injections can effectively control excessive sweating, providing you with a new level of comfort and confidence.
How Does Botox® Stop Excessive Sweating?
Botox is injected just under the skin in areas where you sweat excessively (usually the armpits, soles of the feet, and palms of the hands). The neurotoxin in the Botox selectively blocks the release of a neurotransmitter that stimulates the sweat glands, preventing excess sweat production.
How Long Does Botox® for Excessive Sweating Last?
The effects of Botox for hyperhidrosis are long-lasting, typically lasting from 6-12 months. This means you can enjoy the benefits of reduced sweating for an extended period. You can monitor when the treatments are wearing off by observing your sweat levels and body odor. The injections may take up to a week to take full effect, but you’ll notice a reduction in sweat gland production within a few days.
The injections are done in our office and usually take 15-30 minutes. There may be slight redness or bruising at the injection sites, but these fade quickly. You should be able to return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.
Possible Side Effects
We use extremely small needles to inject Botox for excessive sweating and numb the area with a topical anesthetic cream before beginning the injections. Side effects are typically mild and may include redness, mild bruising, and temporary tenderness. However, injections into the hand are more difficult because the skin is thicker and harder to numb with a topical treatment. You may have some discomfort for a few days. Some patients may also experience a weakened grip for 2-3 weeks following Botox injections in the palm.
