BOTOX® for Jaw Pain
What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint) is a condition of the joint between the jaw and the skull causing jaw pain, severe headaches, and sometimes lockjaw in sufferers. The pain can be debilitating and chronic with little relief from mouth guards. Repetitive contractions of the muscles surrounding the joint causes too much pressure on the TMJ joint which may lead to eventual arthritis and decay of the bones comprising the space.
BOTOX® for TMJ Disorder and Grinding Teeth
BOTOX® for TMJ is a non-invasive office procedure to relax the muscles of the jaws responsible for the pain and headaches. The procedure can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Typically most patients need anywhere from 12-25 BOTOX® units per side of the face, depending on the size of their muscle and severity of their condition.
How Soon Can you Feel Relief?
The relief is often immediate for most patients, but can take up to 3-5 days to relax the muscles of the jaw. Dr. Payman has injected many patients for TMJ disorder using BOTOX®, and is an expert in the field of TMJ pain relief with BOTOX®.
