Jeuveau in Buckhead and Cumming, Georgia

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a botulinum toxin type A injection that the FDA first approved in 2019 to temporarily improve moderate to severe frown lines in adults. That is its only approved use. In a trial funded by its maker, it was noninferior to Botox for frown lines. Its units are not interchangeable with other brands' units, and it is not for anyone allergic to botulinum toxin.

What it treats

What is Jeuveau approved to treat?

Jeuveau is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines) between the eyebrows in adults. That is its only approved use, and its boxed warning says it is not approved for any condition other than glabellar lines. Using it on crow's feet, forehead lines or other areas is off-label.

Jeuveau is prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs, made by Evolus and first approved by the FDA in 2019. It works the way other type A toxins do: it interrupts the nerve signal to the injected muscle, so frown lines soften as the muscle relaxes. It is one of three toxins the office offers, with Botox and Dysport.

Results

How well does Jeuveau work, and how long does it last?

In the two placebo-controlled trials on the FDA label, 68% and 70% of Jeuveau-treated people had a two-grade improvement in frown lines at day 30, agreed by both investigator and patient, against 1% on placebo. The label gives no duration of effect. The trials ran 150 days, and in a trial funded by its maker, Jeuveau met the test for noninferiority to Botox.

The evidence in detail

In those trials, a difference from placebo was already visible at day 2. By day 150, between 43% and 57% of Jeuveau-treated people were still rated improved or much improved, depending on the trial and on whether the investigator or the patient was asked.

In the head-to-head trial of 540 adults, 87.2% of Jeuveau patients and 82.8% of Botox patients had none or mild lines at day 30, at the same number of units. Noninferior means not meaningfully worse; the trial did not show Jeuveau was better. Evolus, Jeuveau's maker, funded the study. A smaller pilot study sponsored by Evolus found frown lines returned to baseline after a median of 149 days with Jeuveau and 148 with Botox, but it was not powered for inferential analyses, so it cannot show either lasts longer. Our Journal guide, Jeuveau vs Botox, walks through these trials. Plan around a few months, and note the label says to repeat no more often than every three months.

Is it right for you?

Who is Jeuveau for, and who should wait?

Jeuveau suits adults with moderate to severe frown lines. It is not for anyone with a known allergy to any botulinum toxin product or its ingredients, or an infection at the planned injection site. Tell your injector if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a nerve or muscle disease, swallowing or breathing problems, or past dry eye.

The label says the limited pregnancy data cannot show whether Jeuveau poses a risk, and there is no information on breast milk. It urges caution with inflammation at the site, marked facial asymmetry, drooping eyelids, excessive eyelid skin, deep scarring, thick sebaceous skin, or weakness in the target muscle. People with nerve or muscle disease were excluded from the clinical studies, and the label says they may be at increased risk of significant effects. The Medication Guide asks you to mention:

  • A muscle or nerve disease such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • Asthma, emphysema, swallowing, bleeding or heart problems
  • Planned surgery, past facial surgery, drooping eyelids, weak forehead muscles, or dry eye with a toxin before
  • Any other botulinum toxin in the last four months

Your visit

What happens at a Jeuveau visit?

At your consultation, Dr. Payman reviews your history and medicines, asks about any toxin you have had before, and talks through whether Jeuveau, Botox or Dysport suits the areas you want treated. If you go ahead, small injections go into the targeted muscles, and you leave with written aftercare instructions.

  1. ConsultationDr. Payman reviews your health history, medicines and goals.
  2. Your toxin historyYou describe any Botox, Dysport or other toxin you have had, when, and how long it lasted.
  3. ConsentThe plan, risks and cost are explained, and you decide whether to go ahead.

The label says to consider the cumulative dose if other botulinum toxin products are or have been used, so your toxin history matters. For aftercare, see our aftercare page.

Cost

How much does Jeuveau cost in Atlanta and Cumming?

Gold members, who pay $99 a month on a six-month minimum, saved toward Botox, Jeuveau or dermal fillers, pay $10 per unit for Jeuveau. For everyone else, the office quotes your cost at the consultation after your plan is made. Multiply the price per unit by the units your injector plans, and compare that total with other options, because units are not interchangeable between brands.

For national context only, the 2022 literature review gave rough ranges of $8 to $16 per unit for Jeuveau and $10 to $20 for Botox in the United States, without citing a price survey. The 2023 ASPS fee survey gave $435 per neuromodulator treatment across all brands and does not report Jeuveau separately. Both vary by region and provider and are not Derm Clinic MD prices. See our guide to Botox cost in Atlanta and the Gold membership terms.

Compare

How is Jeuveau different from Botox, and how do I choose?

Both are botulinum toxin type A products from different makers. Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for four cosmetic uses and Jeuveau for one, frown lines, and each brand's units come from its own test, so they cannot be converted. For frown lines the choice usually comes down to price, the areas you want treated and your history with each product.

More on how they compare

Jeuveau is made by Evolus and was first approved in 2019; Botox products have been approved since 1989. Compare the total for your plan rather than the price per unit, because unit prices differ and units are not interchangeable. If you want crow's feet, forehead lines or neck bands treated with an approved product, Botox Cosmetic holds those approvals. To compare options, book a consultation and ask for the plan and total for each. Our Dysport page covers the third toxin the office offers.

Safety

What are the side effects and risks of Jeuveau?

In the two placebo-controlled trials on the FDA label, the most common reactions were headache (12%, against 13% on placebo), upper respiratory infection (3%) and eyelid ptosis (2%). Needle-site effects include pain, swelling, redness, bleeding or bruising, and infection. Most reactions appear in the first week and, though usually temporary, can last several months or longer. The boxed warning covers spread of toxin effects.

Full safety details

The boxed warning says toxin effects may spread from the injection area. The label lists symptoms such as generalized weakness, double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, trouble swallowing or speaking, loss of bladder control and breathing difficulty, hours to weeks after injection. The label notes that spread symptoms have been reported with botulinum toxins in approved uses too, at doses comparable to or lower than the maximum recommended total dose. Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening, and deaths have been reported. Seek immediate medical care for swallowing, speech or breathing difficulties. Dry eye has also been reported after frown-line treatment, so report eye pain, irritation, light sensitivity or vision changes.

Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported for botulinum toxin products, and the label notes reports of heart rhythm problems and heart attacks, some fatal. An existing neuromuscular disorder may make effects stronger. If you have weakness, blurred vision or drooping lids, avoid driving.

Questions

Questions patients ask about Jeuveau

Short answers here. Your own plan, product and cost are set with Dr. Payman at your consultation.

Ask at a consultation

How often can I have Jeuveau?

The label says retreatment should be no more frequent than every three months, and the Medication Guide says Jeuveau should not be received more than once every three months. In two one-year open-label safety trials of 922 people, with a median of three treatments each, the side effect profile was similar to the single-dose trials. Your injector will recommend timing based on how you respond.

Can my body become resistant to Jeuveau?

The label says botulinum toxins may lead to antibodies that reduce the effect of later treatments by inactivating the toxin. Among 1,414 people treated with Jeuveau in its studies, 2 had antibodies before treatment and 2 developed them afterward. The label adds that comparing antibody rates across products may be misleading.

How well has Jeuveau been studied in older adults?

The two label trials enrolled adults aged 18 to 81, including 68 people aged 65 and older. No differences in safety or efficacy were seen between older and younger participants, but the label says there were too few older adults to know whether they respond differently. Ask your injector what to expect.

What is in Jeuveau, and does it contain human blood products?

Each vial contains 100 units of botulinum toxin type A, human serum albumin and sodium chloride, with no preservative. The label says the albumin is a derivative of human blood and carries an extremely remote risk of transmitting viral disease and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and that no cases of transmission have been identified for licensed albumin products.

Do other medicines or botulinum toxins affect Jeuveau?

The label lists aminoglycoside antibiotics, other agents that interfere with nerve-to-muscle signals, anticholinergic drugs, other botulinum toxins and muscle relaxants as products that may add to Jeuveau's effects, and says to use them with caution. The Medication Guide asks whether you have had any other botulinum toxin in the last four months. Bring a list of your medicines and your toxin history.

Are there aftercare rules for Jeuveau?

The Jeuveau label lists no activity or positioning rules. For botulinum toxins in general, the American Academy of Dermatology advises not rubbing or massaging the treated areas and waiting two hours before strenuous activity. Follow the written instructions your office gives you, which may be stricter.

Is Jeuveau as good as Botox?

One head-to-head trial of 540 adults, funded by Jeuveau's maker, Evolus, compared the two for frown lines. At day 30, 87.2% of Jeuveau patients and 82.8% of Botox patients had none or mild lines, and the authors concluded Jeuveau was noninferior, meaning not meaningfully worse; the trial did not show it was better. The Jeuveau label approves it only for frown lines, and its units are not interchangeable with other brands.
