Dermal fillers

Chin and Jawline Filler in Buckhead and Cumming

Chin and jawline filler adds projection to the chin or definition along the jaw, usually with hyaluronic acid. The FDA lists only certain products for these areas, so using other fillers there is off-label. It adds structure but does not tighten loose skin or lift jowls. In FDA trials of four of these products, about 58% to 74% of treated people were still rated improved at around 1 year, with lower rates in some groups.

What it treats

What can filler do for the chin and jawline, and what does the FDA list?

Filler can add projection to a receding chin and definition along a soft jawline. The FDA lists only certain products for these areas: for the chin, Juvederm Voluma XC, Restylane Defyne and Restylane Lyft with Lidocaine; for the jawline, Juvederm Volux XC and Radiesse (+). Using any other filler in these areas is off-label.

Off-label means the FDA has not reviewed that product for that area. The FDA's patient page says it approved different products for specific areas and that the risks of unapproved uses are not known. For example, the approval statement for Revanesse Versa names facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds, not the chin or jawline.

The table comes from each product's FDA summary of safety and effectiveness: Voluma XC chin, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Lyft, Volux XC and Radiesse (+) jawline. Improved means a blinded evaluator rated at least a 1-point improvement on that trial's scale. The scales and designs differ, so the rows are not a ranking.

Results

How long do chin and jawline filler results last?

Hyaluronic acid filler is temporary, and the FDA trials followed people for about a year. Between 57.6% and 73.7% of treated people were still improved at around 12 months across the four hyaluronic acid products in the table. The FDA says how long filler lasts depends on the material and the area injected.

The evidence in detail

Results were not equal across groups. In the Voluma chin trial, the main goal was met overall: 56.3% of treated people improved at 6 months, against 27.5% of untreated controls. But the rate fell below 50% in people aged 51.5 or older (46.3%), in men (7 of 15) and in Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI, the darker skin types (4 of 14, or 28.6%). For that last group the FDA summary says the device 'performed worse than' the untreated control group (3 of 6), though the numbers are very small and satisfaction was reported as high. A separate blinded review of 3D images found 43.0% improved versus 12.5% of controls. In the Volux jawline trial, 69.0% were rated improved at 6 months versus 38.0% of untreated controls, and 61.3% (84 of 137) at 12 months. Radiesse (+) was measured at 12 weeks; 76 of the 113 responders assessed again at 48 weeks (67.3%) still responded.

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate for chin or jawline filler, and who should look at other options?

Adults over 21 with a receding chin or a soft jawline who want a temporary change are the usual candidates. The Voluma XC chin trial excluded people with significant skin laxity or a severe overbite, and the Volux XC jawline trial excluded severe skin laxity, severe fat under the chin or significant facial asymmetry, so there is little FDA data for them and another approach may fit better.

Filler cannot change bone. ASPS describes surgical routes to more chin projection: moving the jaw bone forward (genioplasty) or placing a shaped silicone implant. It adds that jaw modifications can be advised for chewing and bite, so if a bite or jaw-position problem sits behind your profile, ask whether another specialist's opinion is worth getting.

Raise these with Dr. Payman. The FDA says filler safety is unknown in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, under age 22 and in people prone to keloids or hypertrophic scars, and that injection should be delayed during active skin inflammation or infection. The Voluma chin trial excluded active gum disease, herpes lesions and planned dental work beyond cleanings and fillings, and both trials excluded active autoimmune disease and blood-thinning treatment, so tell the office about all of these.

Your visit

What happens at a chin or jawline filler visit?

Every treatment starts with an in-person consultation. Dr. Payman examines your face, discusses your goals, health history and medicines, and agrees a plan with you before treating. Ask which product is planned and whether its use in your area is labeled or off-label.

  1. ConsultationYou discuss goals, health history, allergies, medicines and any upcoming dental work.
  2. AssessmentYour chin and jaw are examined and photographed from several angles.
  3. Plan and consentYou review the product, the risks and the cost before anything is injected.
  4. TreatmentThe office will tell you how comfort is managed.
  5. Aftercare and follow-upFollow your written aftercare instructions and ask when to return for a check. Each FDA trial allowed one optional touch-up about 4 weeks after the first treatment; 78 of 107 treated people in the Restylane Defyne chin trial had one.

Cost

How much does chin and jawline filler cost?

Derm Clinic MD quotes your cost at the consultation, after Dr. Payman makes your plan, because it depends on your goals. For national scale, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2023 statistics put the average physician fee at $715 for hyaluronic acid fillers and $3,641 for surgical chin augmentation (mentoplasty).

Those are national averages that vary by region and provider, and the filler figure covers all hyaluronic acid procedures, not the chin or jawline specifically. ASPS also notes that health insurance does not cover dermal fillers. Because filler is temporary, compare a plan with a year of maintenance, not only the first visit. See pricing and membership, or book a consultation for your quote.

Chin filler or surgery: which fits which problem?

They solve different problems. Filler adds structure to a receding chin or a soft jawline and is temporary. A chin implant or bone surgery adds projection through an operation, in which an implant is placed on the bone through an incision.

Safety

How risky is chin and jawline filler?

Chin and jawline filler carries the same kinds of risks as other fillers: swelling, bruising, tenderness and lumps are common, and unintended injection into a blood vessel is the most concerning, with possible tissue death, vision loss or stroke. In the FDA chin and jawline trials, serious events were uncommon, but they did occur: one chin participant developed cellulitis needing hospitalization.

Full safety details

In the Voluma chin trial, 14 of 182 people (7.7%) had a treatment-related adverse event, and in 3 people an event lasted longer than 30 days, up to 264 days. Injection-site reactions such as tenderness, firmness, swelling, bruising and lumps were reported by most people. In the Volux jawline trial, 16 of 198 participants (8.1%) had a treatment-related adverse event, most often a mastication (chewing) disorder in 4 (2.0%), and 5 had treatment-related serious events (3 nodules, 1 infection, 1 hypersensitivity), all resolved after treatment. Treatment-related events occurred in 5 of 27 people with Fitzpatrick V or VI skin (18.5%) versus 4.5% and 7.7% in lighter groups, a difference the FDA calls not statistically significant. In the Radiesse (+) jawline trial, more than 5% of patients reported swelling, firmness, lumps, bruising and difficulty drinking, chewing or speaking.

In the 2025 American Academy of Ophthalmology review of 198 cases of vision loss after filler, the listed injection sites were mostly the nose (90 of 226) and forehead (56); the chin and jawline were not among them. That describes reported cases, not proof of no risk. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, vision changes, or white, gray or blue skin near an injection site. For hyaluronic acid filler, hyaluronidase is the usual treatment, though the AAO review found treatments were usually not effective in reversing vision loss; see dissolving filler.

Questions

Questions patients ask about chin and jawline filler

Short answers here. Your own plan, product and cost are set with Dr. Payman at your consultation.

Ask at a consultation

Is chin filler worth the money?

That depends on your goals and budget. In the Voluma chin trial, average chin satisfaction on the FACE-Q scale rose from 34.9 at baseline to 71.3 at 6 months. But filler is temporary, so the cost repeats, unlike an implant.

Can jawline filler lift jowls?

Filler adds volume along the jaw; it does not tighten loose skin. ASPS lists jowls among the changes a surgical facelift treats and says minimally invasive treatments cannot achieve the same results. See non-surgical facelift for the limits and for who surgery suits better.

Does jawline filler work for men?

The data are mixed and men were few. In the FDA's Volux jawline trial summary, 11 of 14 men (78.6%) were responders at 6 months versus 68.9% of women, and it calls the subgroup differences not statistically significant. In the FDA's Voluma chin trial summary, only 7 of 15 men (46.7%) were responders, below the FDA's 50% target, against 57.7% of women.

Can chin or jawline filler be dissolved?

If it is hyaluronic acid, hyaluronidase can break it down. Radiesse (+), which the FDA lists for the jawline, is calcium hydroxylapatite, and a 2024 review lists that material among fillers hyaluronidase cannot dissolve. The FDA warns that fillers not made of hyaluronic acid can be difficult or impossible to remove.

Does chin or jawline filler hurt?

In the Voluma chin trial, people rated pain during injection at an average of 2.3 on a 0 to 10 scale, with some scores up to 8. The Voluma XC gel contains lidocaine, and tenderness and swelling are common afterward. Your injector will tell you how comfort is managed.

Will chin or jawline filler affect my smile or sensation?

In the Voluma chin trial, over 90% of treated people kept the highest facial function grade before and after treatment, and sensation testing showed no reduction. The Volux summary reports no compromise of jaw function, sensation or speech, yet 4 of 198 people (2.0%) had a chewing (mastication) disorder that resolved within 3 days. Report numbness, weakness or an uneven smile to the office.
